Do I need to be in good physical shape to begin training?

 No, Consistency is key. Anyone can learn or even master jiu-jitsu, it comes down to how often you train. If you are consistent with training this can lead to improved fitness. As we train both men and women at all ages and sizes, we will work with you to get where you want to be and at a pace that is right for you.

What kind of equipment do I need to start out?

White or Blacks gis on required on gi days. Black Rash guard and black shorts or spats for no gi Wednesday. If you would like to purchase a gi through the school, please speak to Professor Mario for pricing as pricing varies from brand to brand and kids to adult.

Do I have to buy a gi to do the one week free trial?

No, we offer loaner gis that are washed after every wear.

What is the belt system for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

We follow the IBJJF belt ranking system. All new students with no experience, kids or adult will start with a white belt. 

Is there a belt rank test and if so, do you charge testing fees?

No, Professor Mario tracks all progress of each student as they grow and are promoted when he see the skills needed for the next belt rank.

I’m over 40 years old, am I too old to particiapte in BJJ classes?

No, several hundreds of people across the nation over the age of 40 are active in the BJJ community, training and competing on a regular basis. Please work to your own ability and use the time needed to recover and you will do great! 

what is each class like?

Each class starts with bowing in, a light warm up followed by techniques and drills. Each class ends with 30 minutes of live sparring.
